Poet Shamsur Rahman's death anniv today -The Asian Age

The 11th death anniversary of one of the major poets in modern Bengali literature, Shamsur Rahman, will be observed today. Different socio-cultural organizations have drawn up different programs to mark the day. Jatiya Kabita Parishad, Kabi Shamsur Rahman Foundation, Kabi Shamsur Rahman Smriti Parishad and poet's family members will place floral wreaths at the poet's grave at Banani graveyard in the city at 10.30 am today, Kabi Shamsur Rahman Smriti Parishad Secretary and Jatiya Kabita Parishad President Poet Muhammad Samad said.

The death anniversary will also be observed at Shamsur Rahman's ancestral village home in Raipura of Narsingdi through different programs. Shamsur Rahman was born on October 23 in 1929 and brought up at Mahuttuli in the capital.

He earned a number of prestigious awards at home and abroad, including Bangla Academy Award 1969, Ekushey Padak 1977, Swadhinata Dibosh Award 1991. Shamsur Rahman breathed his last at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) Hospital on August 17, 2006 in Dhaka.
