Infozillion BD Teletech has been granted a licence to offer MNP services, which allow mobile users to change their operators without changing numbers.
The government granted final approval on Oct 1 and the Bangladesh-Slovenia joint venture has been given 30 days to pay the licence acquisition fee, said Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission chief Shahjahan Mahmood.
The BTRC chairman announced the long-awaited decision at a news conference on Tuesday.
Mahmood introduced Infozillion BD Teletech’s Managing Director Mabroor Hossain to the media.
The service is currently available in 72 countries, the BTRC chairman said. The service is being implemented four years after the proposal was initially approved in June 2013.
Users can switch operators within 72 hours of charging Tk 30, he said. They will have to wait for 90 days to change again.
Now operators are likely to try to improve their services in an attempt to hang on to users.
