There has been a sharp rise in the number of patients suffering from cold-related diseases in Satkhira.

During a ground visit at hospitals in the district, it has been learnt that a several hundreds of children and elderly people with cold-related diseases come to hospitals.

According to data, there is a seven-fold jump in the number of patients suffering from cold-related diseases within a week.

During the visit, it was seen that hospitals in the district were struggling to accommodate the flow of patients.

According to Satkhira Shishu Hospital, about 100 to 150 children with cold-related diseases come to outdoor of the hospital. A total of 40 children have been admitted to the hospital.

In Satkhira Medical College Hospital, a total of more than 100 children were admitted to the hospital in last few days. In these two hospitals, over 200 children have been taking treatment every day.

To mention, the ongoing low temperature coupled with cold wind causes diarrhoea, bronchitis, pneumonia and other respiratory illnesses to people of the district particularly children and aged people. Children are more vulnerable to these infections because their immune system is weak. If the patients come to hospital in time it is easy to give treatment.

Al Ahmed Al Masud, resident medical officer of Satkhira Medical College Hospital, said, "There are 30 beds for children in the hospital. As the beds are full, we are bound to accommodate children on floor. As the flow of patients is on rise, it is hard to provide them quality medical services."

"Despite the pressure, they are trying their best to tackle the situation, the medical officer added.
