Girl with 'tree man' disease at DMCH

A third grader has been diagnosed at Dhaka Medical College Hospital with the same disease as that of Abul Bajandar, who has been diagnosed with 'tree man' disease.

The girl-Shahana, 10-was admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital's Burn and Plastic Surgery Unit. Doctors after primary checkup said she had been suffering from the disease, commonly known as 'tree man' disease, since birth.

Doctors also mentioned that it was caused by the rare genetic condition epidermodysplasia verruciformis and has often been described as an incurable disease.

"When she was a child, something that looked like a tree root started sprouting out her face and it has been getting bigger ever since," her father Shahajahan said adding they tried homeopathic treatment but it did not work. Bajandar has made remarkable progress after 16 successful surgeries at DMCH.

Doctors say if the warts do not grow back, Bajandar would be the first person ever to recover from the disease. "Bajandar's cure was a remarkable milestone in the history of medical science," Samanta Lal Sen, plastic surgery coordinator at Dhaka Medical College hospital earlier said to media.

However, Shahana's intensity was far lower, burn unit project director Dr Abul Kalam said. "We will observe her for the next week and then form a medical team for her treatment," Dr kamal  said.
