Awami League (AL) activists locked into clashes in city's Azimpur area over the feud between two Old Dhaka AL leaders. Vehicles were vandalized and torched amid the clash and the vehicular movement of Azimpur came to a halt during chase and counter chase from 11:00 to 1:00pm yesterday.
The incident triggered from Azimpur Pearl Harbor Community Center where Dhaka South AL General Secretary Shahe Alam Murad called a program. On the other hand, supporters of AL Senior Vice-President Abu Ahmad, known as a pro-Sayeed Khokon man, called a demonstration on the same venue.
The locals found garbage dumped on the entrance of the community center on Thursday morning while the Murad supporters were chanting slogans against the mayor. Police took place smelling the shakeup; however, the appearance of pro-mayor party men triggered the fight at 11:00. Several motorcycles of the groups were torched at Palashy. Later police normalized the situation at 1:00pm.
A number of witnesses said tension prevailed since yesterday morning and the area turned into battleground while the two groups locked into clashes.
The intervention of police stirred the fight and it caused a total halt to vehicles in Azimpur, Palashi and Dhakeshwari Temple areas. Vehicles parked in front of the community center also were vandalized though police took position at Azimpur intersection.
Wishing anonymity, a number of AL leaders said the dispute between Murad and Khokon had been developing since a long time. It came to light on October 26 while the two groups locked into brawl during the inauguration of Mouchak-Moghbazar flyover. Later, the groups vivified the split prompting scuffle on November 1 during an extended meeting of Awami League Dhaka South.
