Rangpur skipper Nasir Hossain fell five runs short of his maiden triple century against Barisal and missed the opportunity of writing his name in the history book as the second triple centurion in National Cricket League, country's top first-class competition on Saturday.
Nasir, who hogged all the lime light after the third day's play of the NCL by remaining unbeaten on 270 failed to keep his temperament unheralded bowler Linkon Dey, to spoil the party after doing all the hard work during their match at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium.
Linkon, who was making his first-class debut with this game, couldn't have asked for anything better as the right-arm medium pace bowler managed to make it an occasion to remember by removing the man of the moment Nasir with his third delivery of the day.
Nasir, who looked poised for the triple hundred eventually had to pay the price by playing an over ambitious pull shot while facing the little known Linkon and as a result mistimed it to end his marathon innings by giving a simple cat at mid-wicket. 'It is disappointing to miss out after coming so close,' Nasir told Asian Age after the game.
'It is how it goes in cricket and there is no use thinking over it now,' he said. 'I am happy with the way managed to construct my innings and it will surely help me raise my confidence in the upcoming days,' he said.
Nasir, who had the chance to become only second Bangladeshi player to score a triple ton after Roqibul Hasan struck unbeaten 313 runs against Sylhet in 2008, hit 32 fours and three sixes in 510 balls innings on his way to 295 runs.
Nasir was adjudged man of the match and his team completed their campaign on third spot while their opponent could not be saved from being relegated to second tier finishing their campaign at the bottom.
After Nasir' s dismissal, Rangpur declared their first innings on 614-7, replying to Barisal 335. Though Nasir failed to keep his patience while waiting for the right moment to get past the land mark of notching up a triple hundred, he surely made his case stronger ahead of the series against Sri Lanka.
