Hasina went to see Prof Iqbal at 12:30pm, inquired after his condition and spent some time with the popular writer.
His wife, Prof Yasmeen Haque, and daughter, Yeshim Iqbal, were also present.
The prime minister has instructed everything possible be done for Prof Iqbal, said her Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim.
“The prime minister was at the hospital for nearly an hour. She also spoke to the medical board formed for his care.”
After the attack Prof Iqbal was first taken to Sylhet’s Osmani Medical College Hospital for surgery but was later transferred to Dhaka’s CMH by air ambulance under instructions from Hasina. Hasina has also ordered law enforcers to take swift action against the perpetrators of the attack.
She was thanked for her actions by Prof Yasmeen Haque.
“She made personal arrangements to bring him here and called teachers to hear first-hand accounts of the situation,” Haque told the media on Sunday.
CMH doctors said Prof Iqbal had suffered six knife injuries to the head, back and left hand during a press briefing on Sunday. He is out of danger and will take some time to recover, they said.
“At the moment he is conscious, aware and out of danger,” CMH Consultant Surgeon General Maj Gen Munshi Md Mojibur Rahman said.
“The hospital is restricting visitors to ensure a speedy recovery and minimise the risks of an infection. We hope to have everyone’s cooperation on this matter.”
