In the wake of the Daily Star editor Mahfuz Anam's admission of the publication of news articles on alleged corruption of Awami League chief Sheikh Hasina, Awami League Organizing Secretary BM Muzammel Haque, MP (Sariatpur-1) said Anam admitted that the publication of the military intelligence DGFI fed news was lack of proper editorial judgment.
He said, Mahfuz Anam, Matiur Rahman, editor of the largest circulated Bangla daily Prothom Alo, and owner of Transcom Group Latifur Rahman jointly organized a syndicate in collaboration with foreign agents. Transcom group is illegally engaged in business in several sectors. Mahfuz Anam is working for Ford Foundation which is working in three districts of Chittagong Hill Tracts. He is responsible for instigating the hill people into a debate on their rights and issues.
Prothom Alo is alleged to have been funding the northeast India separatist militant outfit ULFA. The media group of Transcom played a vital role to create military-backed caretaker government of 1/11 to benefit the two newspapers Prothom Alo and Daily Star.
The newspaper nominated Syed Fahim Munaim as press secretary of Chief Adviser Fakruddin Ahmed of the 1/11 government. Later he joined Maasranga Television, a concern of Square Group, as the chief executive officer (CEO).
During the 1/11 government, the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) issued a notice to Latifur Rahman, owner of Transcom Group to submit wealth statement. Surprisingly the ACC did not proceed further and the issue was forgotten. Meanwhile, Transcom Group turned into a giant entrepreneur through illegal means. During the 1/11 government Mahfuz Anam, Matiur Rahman, and Latifur Rahman were enjoying immunity.
