Metro Rail obstacles contained partially
Metro Rail route from city's Uttara to Motijheel is expected to ease the commuters' sufferings. The route which designed from Uttara connects Mirpur via DOHS.
However, the road is not wide enough for the project. Only nine meters of the road does not allocate enough space for the viaduct (long bridge-like structure carrying railroad across) of Metro Rail. Moreover, the Uttara-Mirpur route has a 730-meter long lake and an old temple. Authorities concerned have dissected the three issues and concluded saying that they had got ways to solve the problems with maintaining sophistication.  We have detected the three issues and discussed with authorities concerned, safeguard expert of Metro Rail project Nurul Islam said.
However, he added that widening the road and shifting the Gouro Nitai Chakuli Temple would take time. The two issues would be kept under regular supervision. He also hoped that the main construction work of the project would start in due time. Road transport and highways division arranged a meeting with the Dhaka Mass Transit Company, Metro Rail consultancy firm, ministry of defense representatives and temple committee members in last February.
The three issues were discussed elaborately at the meeting and three types of solutions were drafted in this regard, a source said. "According to the proposed solution, the road inside Mirpur Cantonment will be widened. Roads and Highways Department will be assigned for separate project allocation which will be implemented by special works organization of Bangladesh Army," the source said.
The cantonment authority approved to fill up the gaps to be created as a result of piling works on the lake. When the piling works will be completed, inside mud will be taken away to give the lake its previous look. Apart from this, the temple committee has agreed to shift the religious structure. The Ministry of Housing and Public Works will allot khas-land out of the cantonment while Metro Rail authority will finance the construction. It can be mentioned that the Metro Rail project faced several hurdles earlier. A faction of Dhaka University students recently demanded its route to avoid the campus area claiming that the placid atmosphere of the university ground would be distorted if the rail course goes through the campus.
Apart from this, the project design was modified in two phases in 2012 while one change was made of the plan avoiding the Tejgaon Old Airport zone. In construction phase three, the rail route will go to Begum Rokeya Sarani from Uttara via Mirpur Cantonment and Pallabi. The route is designed parallel to Rajuk Avenue-2. The rail route would be set up on median of the road. Two city mayors and the city authorities assured several times that traffic congestion of Dhaka city would be dramatically reduced after completion of the project. According to project documents, the construction of the metro project will be completed in 2019.
Twenty-four pairs of trains will run to and from Uttara and Motijheel via Mirpur and Farmgate. They will carry 60,000 passengers in an hour touching every station once every four minutes.
According to project officials, the trains will take less than 40 minutes to reach Motijheel from Uttara. There will be 16 stations - Uttara North, Central and South, Pallabi, Mirpur-11, Mirpur-10, Kaziparha, Taltala, Agargaon, Bijoy Sarani, Farmgate, Sonargaon, National Museum, Doyel Chattar, Bangabandhu National Stadium, and Bangladesh Bank.
