APM Sohel
APM Sohel, Joint Convener of General Students Rights Council, was arrested on Thursday early morning by police. He was arrested from Lucky Akter's apartment in the capital. Lucky Akter became well-known following her lead role in Gono Jagoron Mancha which was launched at Shahb-agh in 2013 demanding prosecution of war criminals.
Lucky Akter has said that APM Sohel is a student of English Department, Jagannath University. Lucky Akter was also a student of the same department in that university. She is former president of Students Union. APM Sohel has played important roles in conducting demonstrations against quota system for entry into government jobs. He recently faced attacks by miscreants.
Reportedly some plain-dressed policemen raided Lucky Akter's rented flat in the capital's Shantinagar on Thursday at around 4 am morning. The policemen thoroughly searched APM Sohel's room and checked his computer history too. They did not find anything except Sohel's cell phone, Lucky Akter said.
The plain-dressed people, who identified themselves to be police personnel, handcuffed Sohel and interrogated him for almost one hour and a half taking him to a different room, Lucky Akter informed.
The policemen said that Sohel was being taken to police station for interrogation over quota protests, according to Lucky Akter. They also told her to communicate with Detective Branch (DB) office, Lucky Akter added.
Several leaders of quota protesters have been arrested by police recently. Deputy Police Commissioner Masudur Rahman (Media) confirmed on Thursday afternoon that Sohel has been arrested. However, Masudur Rahman did not agree to give further details about the reasons behind Sohel's arrest.
Professor Dr. Noor Mohammad, Proctor, Jagannath University told media that he is aware of Sohel's arrest but he does not know why he has been detained.
