The Deputy Commi-ssioners are likely to seek guidelines from the government policymakers on various issues including December polls, drugs, road accidents and moral degradation created through the misuse of social media.
The government on its turn is expected to issue a set of instructions for the heads of the district administrations including maintaining law and order and upholding development activities of the government just months ahead of the parliamentary elections. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate the three-day conference of the deputy commissioners at her office at 10:00 am tomorrow.
The annual meeting is held to discuss the ways of the execution of different policies, guidelines, priorities of the government as well as the proposals of the mid-level field officials of the administration for smooth and effective functioning of the government and maintaining law and order.
The meeting, according to officials was very important considering the December elections and the ongoing anti-drug drive which has sent drug peddlers on run.
They are likely to be advised on how to handle the major opposition BNP's campaign to make the elections questionable and ensure free and inclusive elections as desired by the prime minister. The election will be closely monitored by the international community and thus there should not be any issue for the opposition that could embarrass the government.
The other major issue is the ongoing anti-drug operation which has seen some success and made it as successful as possible by different kinds of campaigns with the help of teachers, social activists, politicians and the younger generation.According to sources at the Cabinet Division, the deputy commissioners have already sent 347 proposals on various issues ahead of the conference.
Additional Secretary of Cabinet Division Faruque Ahmed said ministers, prime minister's advisors, state ministers, deputy ministers and secretaries of 52 ministries will take part in the conference featuring 22 general and 18 working sessions.
The DCs will submit their proposals to the government with a view to getting necessary guidelines from the government, he said. They will take part in an open discussion with the prime minister after the inaugural session, Ahmed said.
From the conference, the DCs may seek guidelines from the government policymakers to overcome the legal, administrative, financial and other challenges which they are facing at the field level in discharging duties, Ahmed added. The Divisional Commissioners will also take part in the conference. The conference will end on July 26.
