The demands of the people of Chittagong for establishing a new medical university and transforming the Chittagong General Hospital into Banga Mata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Medical College are becoming stronger day by day.
Earlier, the Chittagong people demanded to change the Chittagong Medical College (CMC) to Chittagong Medical University and Chittagong General Hospital to Banga Mata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Medical College. But, after facing some administrative difficulties to change the Chittagong Medical College (CMC) to Chittagong Medical University, the government is going to establish a new medical university here in Chittagong now, concerned sources said.
According to the sources, government made the Chittagong General Hospital to 250 bed hospital. The step was taken to convert the Chittagong General Hospital to Banga Mata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Medical College, concerned sources said. Sources said, the concerned authority submitted all documents to make the hospital 250 bed hospital. After settling all disputes over the land, the ministry is taking decision to increase the accomodation facilities of the hospital. Meanwhile, the authority also sent the digital survey map for establishing the Banga Mata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Medical College at General Hospital area on November 25 in 2013. Sources said, the present government is taking steps to establish a new Medical College for women in the port city Chittagong. Following the step, health ministry is taking decision to change the Chittagong General Hospital to Banga Mata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Medical College. The health department has already sent letters to the concerned authority in this regard. The proposed new medical college is likely to start its academic activities in next year. According to the sources, the government is taking decision to change the Chittagong General Hospital to Banga Mata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Medical College. The Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA) Chittagong district committee sent a formal proposal to the ministry of health some years ago. The ministry sent the proposal to the health department. Dr Mohammed Abul Mansur Khan, the director (Planning and research) of the department sent a letter to the Civil Surgeon of Chittagong on 29 August in 2012. In the letter, Mohammed Abul Mansur Khan directed to the Civil Surgeon of Chittagong to send the feasibility study report, sketch map, land condition and estimated project cost for establishing the Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Medical College in Chittagong. Health department also directed to Civil Surgeon of Chittagong to send these requirement by a selection committee and Public Work Division. However, following the directives of the health department, the Civil Surgeon of Chittagong sent a letter to the concerned authorities including minister, secretary of the health ministry, DG of Health Department and Public Works Division at that time for fulfilling the necessary requirements. Meanwhile, the health department sent another letter on 29 August in 2013 for further requirements for establishing the Banga Mata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Medical College. Former civil surgeon of Chittagong Dr Abu Tayeb said, "The procedure to establish the Banga Mata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Medical College at the General Hospital area is undergoing. After ending all formalities, authority starts the activities of the new Banga Mata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Medical College in Chittagong next year." On the other hand, demand of the people of Chittagong for establishing a new Chittagong Medical University is becoming strong day after day. Now, the demand for a new medical college in the port city is very common among the people of all walks of life. Earlier, the president of Chittagong City Awami League and former Chittagong City Corporation mayor Alhaj A B M Mohiuddin Chowdhury sent a proposal to Prime Minster Sheikh Hasina and concerned ministry to establish a new medical college at General Hospital area. He also proposed the name of the new medical college as Banga Mata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Medical College during his tenure as mayor. He also sent proposal to convert the CMC to Chittagong Medical University. It may be mentioned that Chittagong General Hospital was established in 1901on 8.0818 acres of lands at Anderkillah in the port city. In 1927, the locals donated money for establishing 200 bed hospital. Now, there are six departments including Medicine Department, Surgery Department, Gaenae Department, Eye Department, Ear Nose and Throat Department, Child Department, Orthopedic Department and Anastasia Department. There are no accommodation facilities for the doctor and the hospital is under the management of Civil Surgeon of Chittagong.
