Runa Laila is a Bangladeshi playback singer, widely regarded as one of the most popular singers in South Asia and a living legend of the music world. This singer has made Bengali music known beyond the borders. Now this year, the country is going to honor the singer with 'Feroza Begum Memorial Gold Medal 2018.'
Md Akhtaruzzaman, the vice chancellor of Dhaka University will hand over the award to this legendary singer at a function at Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban of DU on July 30. Along with the gold medal, Runa Laila is also going to receive a cheque of Tk 100,000.
In addition, a student of BA (honors) from music department of University of Dhaka with highest CGPA will also receive Feroza Begum Memorial Gold Medal at the university's convocation ceremony.
To keep alive the memory of late veteran Nazrul Sangeet artiste Feroza Begum and her works, 'Feroza Begum Memorial Gold Medal 2018' was introduced at Dhaka University in 2016. Since then, an eminent singer and the most meritorious student from DU's music department have been awarded every year.
Born on July 28 in 1930 in Gopalganj to the zamindars of Ratail Ghonaparha, Feroza Begum was a legendary musician of the subcontinent, whose unique singing genius made her the queen and the eternal incandescent for Nazrul Sangeet.
Previously, internationally acclaimed singers Sabina Yasmin and Rezwana Choudhury Bannya were awarded Feroza Begum Memorial Gold Medal by Dhaka University respectively in 2016 and 2017. In addition, the best students of music department of the university also received Feroza Begum Memorial Gold Medals.
