Students of Comilla University acutely suffering for transportation crisis. -Nazmul Hasan
Several thousand students of Comilla University, who travel by bus between the university and Cumilla city every day have been facing acute transport crisis.The usual hour-long journey by the buses that often carry passengers double or triple their capacity has turned into a nightmare, said students.
Even Students formed several human chain and chanted slogans on the university premises in this month, demanding an immediate, permanent solution to the student's transportation problems.
Humayra Ibnat, a 2nd year student of Statistics Department, said, 'Everyday thousands of students, especially female students traveling to and from city have to maintain a tight schedule, and doing that face immense sufferings.'
It is to be noted that, on March 29 and July 10, Shihab Uddin, 2nd year student of Law and Mahmudul Hasan, 1st year student of English department, suffered serious injuries going under the wheels of rented BRTC bus.
However, according to the university sources, every students has paid transportation fees during their admission for development of transportation facilities. Still, there are only 13 buses for almost 6500 students.
Where the university's own is four. Among them one is mute since nearly six months as no driver was appointed by this time. Rest of the nine are rented from BRTC.
The Chief Coordinator of Transport Management and university's Proctor Dr. Kazi Md. Kamaluddin said, 'This problem exists since our university has been established. Our Vice Chancellor is very sincere to solve this problem. Due to the financial crisis in the university fund, our Vice Chancellor spoke with UGC and took the initiative to buy new buses.'
