People of Dhaka city will greatly miss Annisul Huq, the late Mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) during this year's Eid Ul Azha, city dwellers and urban planners have remarked. After winning the DNCC election in 2015, Annisul Huq conducted special drives to clear up the wastes of sacrificial animals within 48 hours.
Dhaka city looked strikingly neat and clean following the Eid Ul Azha rituals during Annisul Huq's mayoral tenure. But uncertainty has come up regarding the cleanliness of the capital over this year's Eid Ul Azha as Annisul Huq is no more. At least ten projects initiated by Annisul Huq have come to a halt after his death. Urban experts have said that DNCC is suffering from lack of proper leadership following Annisul Huq's demise.
Annisul Huq took up a number of bold initiatives after winning the DNCC polls in 2015 which brought about a lot of positive changes to Dhaka city. His courageous accomplishments include eviction of truck stands from Tejgaon, removing illegal parking from Gabtoli and another nine places, recovery of DNCC land from Monayem Khan's residence in Banani,
planting five lakh trees, installing close circuit cameras across Dhaka north city for safety, construction of 100 modern public toilets and restoring discipline in the transport sector. Annisul Huq also rescued 52 acres land in Gabtoli for producing electricity with waste materials.
Traffic jams and disorder were much reduced through Annisul Huq's hard work. Professor Nazrul Islam, Founder, Nagar Gobeshona Kendra (Urban Research Center) has said that the inhabitants of Dhaka city would face immense trouble if the efforts started by Annisul Huq are not implemented. Strong leaders like Annisul Huq are required to retrieve the lost glory of Dhaka city, Professor Nazrul Islam asserted.
Tejgaon industrial area has once again come under the unauthorized occupation of trucks and covered vans after Annisul Huq's death.
The same thing has happened to Sat Rasta which was freed from illegal parking by Annisul Huq but now that place has been recaptured by the reckless parking of different vehicles. DNCC panel mayor Osman Goni has said that he has sought cooperation from Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal to liberate Sat Rasta from haphazard parking.
Illegal parking has come back to some more areas which were streamlined by Annisul Huq. These places include Gabtoli, Kallyanpur, Amin Bazar, Mohakhali, Mohammadpur, Abdullahpur etc. Annisul Huq had started the work to build up 11 u-turns from Sat Rasta to Uttara but the completion of that project has been extended by one year after Annisul Huq's death.
Annisul Huq inaugurated Green Dhaka project in May 2016 to plant five lakh trees within three years. DNCC Superintendent Engineer Tariq Bin Yusuf said that DNCC did not allot any money for this plantation program. Annisul Huq executed personal efforts to carry out this plantation drive but after his death this project has also come to a stoppage.
Annisul Huq also commenced the noble work of installing liquid electronic display (LED) bulbs and close circuit cameras all over Dhaka north city. Urban experts have urged the government to push forward this project for an illuminated Dhaka city which Annisul Huq worked for so enthusiastically.
Annisul Huq announced to develop the parks and playgrounds of Dhaka city but there has been no remarkable progress with this work after his death.
Annisul Huq endeavored to mobilize four thousand buses to tackle the chaos in transport sector but there is no further advancement with this program. An official of DNCC said on condition of anonymity that DNCC does not have the ability to carry out this project in Annisul Huq's absence.
