Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Mayor Sayeed Khokon has been assigned to implement the initiative taken by late Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Annisul Huq for bringing back discipline in capital's public transport system.
Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader has said that such a decision was taken at a meeting of the road transport advisory council at the Secretariat yesterday.
The minister said, "On the sad demise of Annisul Huq, the initiative taken by him with a view to building a modern public transport system hasn't seen the light. He held many meetings with transport owners in this regard."
He further said, "We have now given this responsibility to DSCC Mayor Sayeed Khokon. He will take initiative anew for building a modern public transport system in the way shown by late Mayor Annisul Haque."
Late Mayor Annisul Huq took different initiatives including a move of introducing bus services under one company in the capital and constructing U-Loop for the modernization of road system. But all these have come to a standstill at his death.
Shipping and Bangladesh Road Transport Workers' Federation Executive President Shajahan Khan, Bangladesh Road Transport Owners' Association President and State Minister for LGRD and Cooperatives Moshiur Rahman Ranga, IGP Javed Patwary, Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Md Asaudzzaman Mia, Bangladesh Road Transport Owners' Association Secretary General Khandaker Enayet Ullah and high officials of the law enforcing agencies were also present.
