New Liberation War Museum awaits inauguration

The Liberation War Museum is going to be shifted at Agargaon from the rented house in city's Segunbagicha area. Already the construction of one building has completed and currently decoration is going on inside of the new museum. If the decoration of the gallery completes by June, the museum will be inaugurated and opened for all in July next. People from all walks of life have funded the new construction work which is going to be country's first museum with international facilities and features. Moreover, the museum will have several arrangements centering the new structure based on the glorious past of the Bengalis. In 2009, the authorities concerned acquired an acre of land at Agargaon in Dhaka to construct a full-fledged museum.
A countrywide competition was floated and out of 70 entries for the architectural design, a jury board, some of whose members were overseas experts, selected a design which currently is being erected.  The museum also urged the countrymen to step in for the funding in 2010 and got a remarkable response of the mass people and several organizations. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina formally laid the foundation stone of the construction on 4 May of 2011. Afterwards, the superstructure started to get the look.  Recently the air cooling system and building management have been completed side by side of the construction. After completing the decoration of the gallery, the contractors will give the finishing touches.
Liberation War Museum trustee Ziauddin Tariq Ali shared the progress and accomplishment of the project.
"Now we can say that 95percent of the construction has been completed. I hope the decoration of the gallery will be completed soon and it would be opened for all in July after inauguration," he said. If the decoration delays, the next probable inauguration date would be September, he added.
"We have nearly 18,000 collections on the Liberation War while we are displaying 1100 to 1200 of them at Segunbagicha. The new museum gallery is 18 times bigger than the rented house gallery and there we would be able to display all of our collections," he furthermore said adding that historical context and information accuracy were taken seriously in decoration plan of the new museum. In the meantime, he recalled the fund collection experiences. "The plan was to collect the large portion of expenditure from the people as they could say they own every inch of the building. I think we will succeed in that context. I can remember a schoolgirl donated Tk 3.50 (three and a half taka) and we accepted the amount," the trustee memorized. The new museum has a regular gallery space of 3,500 sqm for displays. The temporary gallery for exhibitions is 500 sqm according to the architectural plan which meets the IMO and other international specifications. There are also two research institutes under the museum authority named 'Genocide and Justice Research Institute' and 'Center for Study of Bangladesh Liberation War'.  Stage and auditorium of the new superstructure are equipped with latest sound and light systems with 260 seating capacity. Apart from this, there are covered and open spaces for assembly which can also be used as additional viewing area with large-screen projectors in case of visitor overflow from the auditorium. An amphitheater on the premises of the museum will be used for holding school programs.
The car parking has the space for 106 vehicles. The remarkable matter of the construction is not classified as 'green', although the building has some features like conservation of rainwater, LED lamps, and solar cells as the source of a part of the energy requirements which demonstrates the museum's commitment to be environment friendly.
