AL leaders, activists keep faith in Muktadir Chowdhury

Brahmanbaria-3 (Sadar-Bijoynagar) lawmaker and Brahmanbaria District Awami League President RAM Obaidul Muktadir Chowdhury has submitted his nomination form as an aspirant of the ruling Awami League to contest the forthcoming general election scheduled to be held on December 30. Ten aspirants have also sought AL nominations. However, the Brahmanbaria Awami League is united and has kept its faith in Muktadir Chowdhury as the constituency has witnessed massive development during his nearly eight years as a lawmaker.

Muktadir Chowdhury has turned into a symbol of AL's unity and become the last refuge of local leaders and activists. Brahmanbaria today wears a new look because of his pro-people activities, which has earned him respect as a 'poet of development'.

Under the dynamic leadership of Muktadir Chowdhury, the Brahmanbaria Awami League now stands on a solid base. There is no internal feud within the party. All are united and rejuvenated. In his nearly two terms, Muktadir Chowdhury, who is a member of the Awami League central committee, has implemented development works worth about Tk 4 thousand crores in his constituency. His leadership has illuminated the newly-formed upazila Bijoynagar. His constituency has already been brought under cent percent electrification.

Law and order situation in Brahmanbaria has radically changed for the better during Muktadir Chowdhury's tenure. Terrorists, land grabbers and extortionists have been cornered. People in Brahmanbaria are happy and satisfied with the present condition of law and order.  Muktadir Chowdhury has relentlessly been working for a science-based modern Brahmanbaria for future generations.

Some mega projects have been completed during his tenure. A railway overpass has been constructed on TA Road through Brahmanbaria town, which has made the town free of traffic congestion. People also enjoy the beauty of the overpass. The construction of the about 10 km long 'Sheikh Hasina Road' connecting Bijoynagar upazila with Sadar is going on in full swing.

It is to be noted that Muktadir Chowdhury MP was a close associate of Sheikh Kamal, the eldest son of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. In 1969, he was elected general secretary (GS) of Dhaka College student union. He fought for his motherland in the Liberation War in 1971 as a guerilla fighter and was seriously wounded. He still bears the marks of his injuries. He was one of those who openly protested the brutal assassination of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and most of his family members in 1975. For this reason, he was arrested and had to languish in jail for long 23 months. He actively took part in the Janatar Mancha in 1996, which accelerated the fall of the BNP government.

When the Awami League came to power in 1996, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina appointed Muktadir Chowdhury as her personal secretary and he diligently performed his duties for five years. After the death of the then lawmaker Lutful Hai Sachchu, Muktadir Chowdhury was elected MP for the first time in a by-election in 2011. He was again elected in the election held on January 5, 2014.
