US urge government to hold fair elections


US urged Bangladesh government to keep its promise by holding the forthcoming parliamentary elections free, fair and credible manner.

This will be the reflection of Bangladeshi people's desire, termed US Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary, Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs Alice G. Wells. She urged all political parties and related concerned to play responsible role and keep the election process calm.

Alice G. Wells said this at a special interview with vernacular daily Bangla Tribune. She said US will also help the election observer team.

Meanwhile, a proposal has been passed on December 13 at US representative council urging Bangladesh to hold free, fair and credible elections. Expressing her deep concern about pre-election violence, Alice Wells said democratic process is hinder by violence and anti democratic forces get the bonanza from it.

About election campaigning she said, "Every political parties must feel secure to participate fully in political process. They will have to give political freedom to express their opinions, chance to conduct rally and peaceful election campaign."

Alice Wells said US is not supporting any specific political party or person in the Bangladesh polls. US government believes in democratic process and the values of the people. US have given fund to the US organization NDI to observe Bangladesh elections. It will also send international observer to Bangladesh.

The top US diplomat also said US embassy in Dhaka will deploy separate election observer group across the country. We also deploy 15 thousands observer with Election Working Group besides United Kingdom and Switzerland.

Assistant to Secretary of State Clinton (2011-2012); and Executive Assistant to Under Secretary for Political Affairs William J. Burns (2009-2011).
