DSCC to rebuild 17 markets

Mayor’s allocation quota increased to 30pc


Dhaka South City Corporation has taken initiatives to rebuild 17 markets in the capital. There will be modern facilities including food court, gymnasium, hall room, community centers, cinema hall and free spaces at the newly would be built marketplaces.       
Six of them already have got final nods including construction issues. Other eleven have a committee working in this regard.
Mayor's shop allocation quota has been increased to 30percent from 10. The city authority said that DSCC mayor Sayeed Khokon would inaugurate the construction very soon.Chief Executive Officer of DSCC Khan Mohammad Bilal said they had been emphasizing on location and environment. "The city authority will discuss it with the local representatives and dignitaries before the construction. The facility features will be set up according to the location assessment," he said adding that they would appoint consultants to make the markets business-friendly. Moreover, traffic management and keeping free spaces were on consideration, the official commented. According to the quota issue, Khan opined that the mayor gradually getting involved more and more with the people and he feels the need for the marginalized portion of the stakeholders. "Therefore, the quota has been increased," he said stressing that the procedure was made within the legal boundary of the city authority. Apart from, the DSCC sources said that the authority has taken all necessary initiatives to rebuild the Dhakeshwari Roadside Market, Paribagh Supermarket, Banga Bazar Complex Market, Sadarghat Hawkers Market, Hatirpul Kitchen Market and Ladies Park Market in first phase.
On the other hand, Bangabandhu Avenue Hawkers Market, Doyaganj Kitchen Market, Azimpur Supermarket, Kathalbagan Kitchen Market, Simson Roadside Market, Bakshi Bazar Market, Siddique Bazar Hawkers Market, Fulbaria City Hawkers Market, Badamtoli Market, Dhalpur Kitchen Market and Kaptanbazar Roadside Market. Recently the corporation has passed a project to rebuild 17 markets. The officials have been approved packages to the appointed consultant, DSCC engineering department sources said. The chief engineer of the authority Md Nurullah hoped that they would complete the construction work within two years."The city would get a better look after the construction completed," he added. Currently DSCC has a total of 86 markets. Among them, nearly 40 are in poor condition while the corporation is not getting any monthly rent from three others due to the ongoing legal complexities at court. The dues of Gulistan Trade Center has hiked above Tk 19 crore while dues of Fulbaria Supermarket-2 is nearly 15 crore. DSCC is now mulling to restructure the markets making them more business oriented and profitable.
The DSCC mayor said, "We are appointing expert designers with a view to reshape the markets differently. I will go through the design details and approve." Mayor Khokon also underscored the welfare of marginalized people and promised he would allocate shops to them from his increased quota.
