Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Science and Technology University (BSMRSTU), Gopalganj is now the fourth largest university in the country according to its number of seats.
The university began its academic activities with only 160 students in five departments in 2011-2012 academic session. Just seven years after the journey, now 3500 students get the opportunity to admit in 34 departments of the university annually.
The university has been giving the opportunity of admission for foreign students from 2016. More than 300 foreign students took the admission opportunity in 2016-17, 2017-2018 and 2018-19 academic sessions. Most of the foreign students are from Nepal and Somalia. Besides foreign students, many tribal students of Bangladesh also take admission every year.
The BSMRSTU is known as ragging and drug free campus. There is no mischief on the campus due to the strict vigilance. With the intense efforts of the university Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr. Khondakar Nasiruddin, it has been possible to eliminate ragging and addiction from the campus.
The university is one of the largest plant collection and preserving place. It is enriched with the presence of around 22,000 trees. Among them, 2800 umbriferous trees, while 7,000 fruit trees, 1000 herbs, 10,000 flower trees and about 1000-species of native plants. Besides these, there are various rare trees are also preserved there. In winter, whole campus cover with colorful flowers. Visitors from different places of Bangladesh come to enjoy this Naturalistic beauty in every year.
The university has secured the first place in Gopalganj Agriculture and Technology Fair in 2016, 2017 and 2018 for the collection of trees. VC Prof Dr. Khondakar Nasiruddin has received the Prime Minister's National Award for outstanding contribution in the agricultural sector.
The central library of the university has adequate book collections. Students can collect books according to their needs. They have also full free access right to the library's IT corner where a lot of computers are set up with Internet connection. Besides, books are being distributed using digital bar codes in automation system.
CCTV cameras have also been installed at different points of the university campus to avert any untoward incident.
It is now known as the digital campus in Bangladesh. Students can get full free access of high speed WiFi and broadband connection in the whole campus and get benefited by connecting easily with the outer world.
