The government is going ahead with a plan to construct a new flyover from ECB square of Dhaka Cantonment to Mirpur Kalshi intersection, together with widening of Kalshi Road, in the capital with a view to removing traffic congestion.
The flyover and road widening plan will facilitate traffic movement from Mirpur, Pallabi and Dhaka cantonment to Uttara, Tongi, Mohakhali, and Rampura areas. The Public Works authorities have started the road widening work and the piling for giving the foundation of flyover to be completed in the next few years, DNCC engineering division sources said.
The Divisional Chief of Planning Commission Enayet Hossain told The Asian Age that the revised project of the flyover is in their department. Taking everything into consideration regarding the project, they will place it to the ECNEC for approval. But it is beyond doubt that the project is going to be done in the days to come.
The Dhaka North City Corporation Additional Chief Engineer Syed Qudrat Ullah told The Asian Age that the building of flyover depends on the completion of piling work. After finishing the job properly, the construction of flyover will begin and the work needs to be completed within minimum three years.
The chief engineer has also said the project has been submitted to the Planning Commission for approval. The Planning Commission will give the final approval by verifying feasibility of the plan.
Earlier, a road was constructed to connect Mirpur cantonment with Dhaka cantonment via Kalshi intersection. As a result, Bhashan tek Jhil has losing its existence. The people living in adjacent areas are facing waterlogings and excessive traffic congestion. Such a project was expensive, lacked advance planning and was wasteful, according to analysts.
DNCC and Special Work Organization of the Bangladesh Army are supposed to complete the construction of the flyover and road widening work, the sources said.
After construction of the widened road and the flyover, traffic movement to the area will become easy and comfortable. A large number of people in the area along with students of the Military Institute of Science and Technology (MIST), National Defense College (NDC), Staff College, Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP) and Mirpur Cantonment Public School in Mirpur use the route, the sources said.
