‘Editors Guild will fight for press freedom’
Toufique Imrose Khalidi, President of Editors Guild has said that Editors Guild would fight for freedom of press. Editors Guild aims to restore the dignity of the news organizations in Bangladesh and to build up a sustainable environment where newspapers and media agencies will be able to work independently, he added.
Toufique Imrose Khalidi is also Editor-in-Chief of bdnews24.com. He further said that Editors Guild’s national convention would be held this year.
Editors Guild hosted an iftar party at Lakeshore Hotel in the capital’s Gulshan on Wednesday in which higher government officials, policymakers, politicians, journalists and diplomats from different foreign missions attended. It was Editors Guild's first public event.
Toufique Imrose Khalidi also laid emphasis on the ethical values that journalists should comply with while presenting reports. He called upon the government to rectify certain aspects of the Digital Security Act 2018 which can threaten the professional work of journalists.
Toufique Imrose Khalidi urged journalists to work in a responsible way and to propagate truthful and objective news.
Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Riva Ganguly Das, British High Commissioner Robert Chatterton Dickson and envoys from some other diplomatic missions were present in the program.
Prime Minister’s Energy Affairs Adviser Toufiq Elahi Chowdhury, Kamal Uddin Talukder, Secretary, Rural Development and Cooperatives Division, former agriculture minister Matia Chowdhury, former information minister Hasanul Haq Inu, Workers Party’s President Rashed Khan Menon, Chairman of Editorial Board of The Asian Age Shoeb Chowdhury, Chittagong Stock Exchange Chairman Major General (Retd) Shamim Chowdhury, senior journalist Mozammel Babu, senior journalist Syed Ishtiaque Reza, President of Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) Mujahidul Islam Selim, Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s standing committee member Abdul Moyeen Khan and some other dignitaries attended the iftar party.
Toufiq Elahi Chowdhury welcomed the exposure of Editors Guild and expressed hope that this platform would play substantial roles for the rise of impartial journalism in Bangladesh. He laid stress on the necessity of honest and free press for the country's advancement.
