Sushma Swaraj, former external affairs minister of India and a stalwart of the Bharatiay Janata Party (BJP), died at the AIIMS in New Delhi yesterday. She was 67. The senior BJP leader suffered a cardiac arrest. She was administered CPR but did not respond, according to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, reports The Hindu.
Sources said she was brought to AIIMS at 10:15 pm and was straight away taken to the emergency ward. A number of senior Ministers rushed to the hospital. Sushma had put out a tweet in the evening congratulating Prime Minister Narendra Modi after the Centre's move to revoke special status for Jammu and Kashmir and bifurcate the border state into two Union Territories secured Parliament's approval.
"Thank you Prime Minister. Thank you very much. I was waiting to see this day in my lifetime," she said. Sushma had a kidney transplant in 2016. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed deep shock at the demise of Sushma Swaraj.
