Solar-panel based water pump have been getting popularity among the farmers in seven unions of Sonatola upazila in Bogura as their land can be irrigated with less cost water supply.Less costly, reliable irrigation system and uninterrupted supply of water in the irrigated land has bounded them to depend on the system recently.

Last 7 to 8 years, with the finance of the World Bank and with the suppervision of Infrustruction Development Company Limited (IDCOL) under the finanace ministry of Bangladesh Government, at least 50 solar-panel based water pump were set in different locations of the upazila.

To ensure uninterrupted water supply with low-cost irrigation and without the connection of electricity, the farmers-friendly present government has ensured such new system of irrigation for the development of the root-level farmers of the country. Such new-gern of modern irrigation system has been providing the benefits to the farmers of the areas under the upazila.

Zahidul Islam of Kalaihata village, Nazrul Islam of Shakhila village, Enamul Kabir of Tekani village, Tozammel Hossain of Fulbari village said that diseal-run shallow and deep machine based irrigation system is very costly and after getting paddy crops, they do not get much profit.

The farmers have to pay one-fourth of the paddy of the land to the owners of the shallow and deep machines but the solar panel-based water pump has been paid less cost. The farmers have to pay only at Tk. 1,800-2,000 per bigha of land every year.

Contacted, Salek Mia, Managining Director of Salek Solar Water Pump Limited said that Bangladesh is an agro-based country and over 85 percent of the people of the country depend directly on agriculture and they have to struggle much for their existence. Their water pump has been getting poplarity among the farmers of the country.

Contacted, Masud Ahmed, Upazila Agriculture Officer of Sonatola upazila said that the farmers have been improving their lot by getting the benefit of low-cost solar panel-based water pump irrigation system.

Contacted, Safiqul Islam, Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of Sonatola upazila said that the present-farmers-friendly government has been trying its utmost to improve the condition of the farmers.

Low-cost irrigation system, timely fertilizer-supply, ensure regular visit of the officials of agriculture department to the farmers' field, added the UNO.
