Roanu damages Tk 250 crore crops, properties

Ctg, 23 May- Deputy Commissioner of Chittagong Mezbah Uddin said Chittagong and Cox's Bazar suffered over Tk250 crore loss as cyclone Roenu damaged crops on vast of lands and demolished several thousand houses and valuable properties.
Crops on 154 acres of land fully and 2541 acres partially damaged by the cyclone in Chittagong alone.According to him, 4.83 lakh people were worst victims of the cyclone while 81,411 people in 104 unions lost their homes. During the storm, 20892 homes were fully damaged while 25766 homes partially damaged in Chittagong. He also said that a total of 34 educational institutes and 12 religious institutes, 47 km of roads, 27 km of coastal embankments fully damaged while 66 km coastal embankments have partially damaged.  "A total of 100 cattle and around 5000 poultries have washed away by the tidal surge followed by the Cyclone Roenu. Sources said hundreds of trees fell on the roads and many other places in the city and rural areas due to the cyclone wind. Several walls have collapsed at different areas in Chittagong causing injury of many people. The first cyclone of the season in the Bay named Roanu over west central Bay and adjoining area which hit Chittagong on May 21  damaged costal embankments of Chittagong and Cox's bazar. Meanwhile, Chittagong port, prime seaport of the country, which stopped its operational activities on Friday, resumed its operation since  Sunday after 48 hours of suspension.
Besides, Chittagong Shah Amanat International Airport (SAIA), which suspended its operational activities at 4:00 pm on Friday, also resumed its operation from Sunday.   
The loss of people of coastal areas in Cox's Bazar particularly the people of offshore islands Kutubdia, Moheshkhali and Swandwip is more. Maximum coastal embankments have been damaged during the cyclone Roanu. DC of Cox's Bazar Mohammed Ali Hossain said: "Maximum coastal embankments, roads, road-lights, houses were damaged during the cyclone Roanu. We are calculating the damage and lose during the cyclone Roanu.
Probably the lose in Cox's Bazar likely to cross Tk 100 crore taka during by the cyclone Roanu."
