Proposed budget ignores Roanu victims: Activists

The proposed national budget for 2016-17 fiscal has neglected the climate refugees, especially the Roanu victims, rights activists claimed. "The government must consider allocation for the people who lost their valuables on 23 May, after Roanu hit coastal areas," they commented.  The demand was placed by civil society members in front of Jatiya Press Club on Saturday.
They said the budget was blind to 4 crore people of 24 coastal districts neglecting the climate change impacts. "Around 20 million people are currently living under the open sky with a little access to fresh drinking water. The budget announcement rarely addressed their crying need," they narrated.
Regarding the issue, the speakers put forward their eight-point demand. Those are- allocation of taka 6.5 thousand crore to Roanu-hit people, special funding to save Bhola district from river erosion, ensuring all-out participation to rehabilitation projects and engage armed forces for critical constructions especially in Kutubdia and Bhola.
