Goethe-Institit Bangladesh, in cooperation with Omni Music, organized a workshop that they titled as ‘Dialogue on professional sound’ by renowned German Professor Matthias Middelkamp on Tuesday (June 14) morning at the Yamaha Omni Music premise.
Some 35 music specialists working in the sound engineering scene in Bangladesh took part in the workshop. Among them were TV- and radio broadcasters, sound designers and musicians who were eager to hear about first-hand experiences of the German "Tonmeister" and Professor of the Berlin hochschule der populären künste (university of popular arts). The event was mainly focusing on the recording of live-sound, live-broadcast and acoustic planning.
During the workshop, Mr. Middelkamp mainly focused in answering direct questions of his audience like "What is the best way to set up a sounds system for a classical orchestra, playing with a rock band?". The Professor impressed his audience with precise answers to this and various other questions by giving practical tips for example on how to capture the sound of a flute, where to place the French horns in a orchestras' setting, what to think about during field recording and while making a voiceover for a movie.
While in Germany, there a various ways of education in the field of sound engineering, in Dhaka it is hard to find useful information. "Normally we get information from the Internet, there is no such school in our country so we read manuals, some books and use the internet", said Shamim Ahmed from DJ Pro "It was very helpful for me because I have been working in the life-sound industry for the last three years".
"Some topics Mr. Middelkamp was talking about are absolutely new to the industry and not even introduced to Bangladesh yet", explained Mahmood Hossain Farsim from 92.4 Radio Shadhin "this workshop will benefit us in the long run. Right before the end in this event, Professor Middelkamp distributed certificate of attendance amongst the workshop participation.
Professor Middelkamp has worked with renowned artists like Robert Wilson, Laurie Anderson, Nike Wagner, ZDF, RTL, ORF, West-Eastern-Divan Orchestra, MDR, Sinfonierorchester, Afghan National Instiute of Music, and so on.
