Actor-MP Mimi Chakraborty has worked assiduously to reach the lofty heights she has reached on Monday. "Honesty and hard work are the two virtues I swear by. I've never been complacent about my career," she says, as we settle in for what she refers to as a rather "special" chat.
After all, she has been voted the Calcutta Times Most Desirable Woman 2020. While films still remain her mainstay, Mimi has successfully established a political career, one that, by her own admission, is a bigger responsibility to shoulder. The journey from Jalpaiguri to Kolkata hasn't been easy. But she believes destiny favours a hard worker. In a candid tete-a-tete, Mimi opens up about love, life and more.
Q. How does it feel to be voted the Calcutta Times Most Desirable Woman of 2020?
Mimi: The feeling of one's hard work getting recognised is incomparable. I am thankful to Calcutta Times and my fans for this honour. It is heartening to know that people find you desirable. As an artiste, I work towards entertaining and making the audience happy - through my films, music and performances. It's the best feeling when hard work is rewarded.
Q. What according to you makes a woman desirable?
Mimi: A woman who empowers other women is incredibly powerful and desirable.
Q. How has the year 2020 been for you?
Mimi: It's been hard for everyone - not just me. In life, we tend to go after the bigger things. But the pandemic taught me that life is all about the three basic necessities - food, clothing and shelter. If you've got them, you should consider yourself blessed. So, I have no complaints - only gratitude.
Q. Are you aware that men find you desirable? What is the X-factor in you that makes men go weak in the knees?
Mimi: (Laughs) Well, then, why am I still single? Does it matter if men are going weak in their knees unless one of them is ready to go down on one knee for me? I don't know about the X-factor but I can tell one thing for sure - I spread love. I believe the love I give finds its way back to me.
Q. What are the qualities that you find desirable in a man?
Mimi: He should be a genuinely good human being. I don't care for looks as much. I will be happy with a partner who can double as my best friend.
Q. How has your experience been in the industry so far?
Mimi: I was an outsider. I had had my share of struggles but I'd be lying if I said I never felt welcomed. Coming from a small town and trying to break into the entertainment industry wasn't easy. People would mock the way I look, my diction and my tomboyish attitude. But, over years, the industry and my audience accepted me for what I am. I am truly grateful for that.
Q. What milestones have you set for yourself?
Mimi: I haven't reached my milestone yet. I'm happy but I am not content. Whatever I've achieved, that was yesterday. Today is a new day and there's a lot more to achieve.
