Jahanara Imam's 27th death anniv observed

The 27th death anniversary of Shaheed Janani Jahanara Imam, a Bangladeshi writer and political activist, observed in the capital on Saturday. Different socio-cultural organizations observed the day through various programs maintaining Covid-19 protocols.  

She left the world on this day in 1994 while undergoing treatment abroad. Born on May 3, 1929, in Murshidabad district of West Bengal, Jahanara Imam passed SSC in 1942, HSC in 1944 from Rangpur Carmichael College. She passed BA in 1960 from Lady Brabourne College in Kolkata. She received a Certificate in Education degree from the United States in 1964 and completed her MA from Dhaka University in 1965.

Jahanara Imam spent her career teaching at Vidyamoyee Govt. Girls High School in Mymensingh, Siddheswari Girls' High School in Dhaka, and Dhaka Teachers Training College. Shaheed Janani Jahanara Imam received the Bangla Academy Award in 1991. She has also received numerous awards.

Jahanara Imam's elder son Shafi Imam Rumi was martyred in the 1971 Great Liberation War. After losing her husband and children in 1971, Jahanara Imam became an inspiration for the freedom-loving people of the post-liberation country.Her diary 'Ekattorer Dinguli' written during the 1971 Liberation War was her greatest creation, which is acceptable as a valuable document of the Great Liberation War.

Under the leadership of Shaheed Janani, a committee 'Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee' was formed on January 19, 1992. Besides this, a national coordination committee consisting of 70 organizations was formed on February 11 of the same year to implement the spirit of the Liberation War and eradicate the Ghatak Dalal of 1971 - where Jahanara Imam was also made its convener. Shaheed Janani Jahanara Imam breathed her last in Michigan, US in 1994.
