The DC Universe is home to some truly exceptional combatants, from street brawlers to master martial artists. For almost 90 years, readers have been treated to exciting and bizarre action scenes featuring these fighters- and even video games have gotten on board with the hugely popular Injustice franchise. With so many skilled characters to keep in mind, it can be difficult to remember who the best of the best are. It gets a little more complicated when some of the highest-rated fighters are also lesser-known characters, with many of them not even possessing superpowers to give them an unfair edge over others.
8. Nightwing Was Trained By Batman Himself
Dick Grayson began his crime-fighting career as a teenager under the mantle of Robin and was the trusted sidekick to the legendary Batman. From that young age, he was intensely trained by his mentor to ensure he could handle himself against Gotham's rogue gallery.
As he grew up, Dick ditched the Robin identity to carve out his own path as the hero Nightwing. His natural talent for gymnastics plays a huge part in his fighting skill, which coupled with his years of training helps to make Dick a more than capable fighter. He's so good that he's even taken on the role of Batman more than once.
7. Bronze Tiger Is Considered A Lethal Weapon
Benjamin Turner, aka Bronze Tiger, is an antihero who has worked as part of the Suicide Squad on occasion. He doesn't possess any powers but has lighting fast reflexes, and like many other expert DC fighters, is highly proficient in multiple fighting styles, putting him in the same league as the deadly Lady Shiva. While he isn't as well-known a character as others, he found his way to the small screen in Arrow and was portrayed by Michael Jai White. In the show, he started off as a villain before siding with Green Arrow during a prison escape in the series' 7th season.
6. Deathstroke Is A Master Assassin
Slade Wilson/Deathstroke the Terminator is a longtime rival to Nightwing and numerous other DC heroes. He has enhanced mental and physical attributes which makes him dangerous enough- but all that is coupled with his years of experience in combat and weapons training.
Slade enlisted in the military at only 16 years old which kicked off his dangerous expertise, and he has squared off with almost every DC hero but somehow keeps going. Even after the loss of his right eye, Deathstroke is still more than capable of besting most opponents.
5. Katana Doesn't Even Need Her Supernatural Weapon
Katana is a a master samurai which is all she needs to take on the vast majority of enemies. However, she has an extra advantage just to put some extra fear into those she encounters. Her weapon of choice is the Soultaker Sword, which is pretty much what it sounds like.
When Katana kills anyone with the supernatural blade, it absorbs their soul and traps them along with everyone else who has died by it. This makes the prospect of taking her on in battle even more terrifying than usual. She frequently works as part of the Outsiders, a black-ops team run by Batman.
4. Ra's al Ghul Has Centuries Of Experience
The Head of the Demon, better known as Ra's al Ghul, has survived for multiple lifetimes thanks to his greatest weapon: The Lazarus Pit. This green pool has the power to rejuvenate weak and aged individuals and even resurrect the dead (usually with dire consequences). As a result, he has had centuries to perfect his combat skills.
Ra's also heads the League of Assassins, a nightmare group of killers who have come into conflict with numerous DC heroes such as Batman and Superman. Even his own children are trained killers. He is also the grandfather of Batman's son Damien, and this has led to numerous heated moments between the two men.
3. Black Canary Has Mastered Around A Dozen Martial Arts
Black Canary has a powerful ability nicknamed the Canary Cry, an ultrasonic blast emitted when she screams that can stun her foes or decimate huge targets if she chooses to. This alone makes her an extreme threat in any fight, but most of the time she won't resort to using it. Instead, she'll make use of the dozen or so martial arts practices that she's mastered.
With expertise in boxing, aikido, judo, kung-fu, and more, anyone who picks a fight with Black Canary is pretty much asking for it. She has even had some training from none other than Wonder Woman. With that knowledge along with everything else she's learned (and her Cry ability), it's no wonder she can even best Batman on occasion.
2. Batman Is Feared For A Reason
Despite the aforementioned loss to Black Canary, Batman's immense fighting talent can't be overstated. He started his obsessive training from a young age after his parent's murder and has compiled over 120 different fighting styles. With that huge library of experience, Batman has managed to create his own hybrid-style comprised of 8 or so of those styles.
It's pretty much a given by this stage that with enough time to prepare, Batman can take on almost any threat. He has gone toe-to-toe with Superman himself and walked away as the victor. His unbelievable level of determination and resolve is an even greater skill than his fighting prowess.
1. Lady Shiva Is Unrivalled
A martial arts grandmaster and deadly assassin, Lady Shiva specializes in taking her opponent's lives with only her bare hands, as she simply doesn't need to use a weapon. Despite that particular skill set, she has also worked alongside Batman and other heroes and is also the mother of Batgirl Cassandra Cain.
Lady Shiva is capable of predicting her opponent's next move by reading their body language, making it virtually impossible to surprise her in a fight. Batman has stated that she "may well be the best fighter alive." That's a pretty solid review for anyone to have.
