Bangla Academy president and National Professor Rafiqul Islam has been admitted to Evercare Hospital in the capital after he falls sick. He has been undergoing treatment at the high dependency unit (HDU) of the hospital. Family sources said he was admitted to Evercare Hospital on Tuesday last after he suffered from pneumonia. His physical condition is now stable.
Professor Rafiqul Islam got admitted to the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Hospital on October 7 last with abdominal pain. After examinations, water was detected in his lungs. Later, he was shifted to Evercare Hospital, reports agency.
Professor Islam completed his Master's in Bengali Language and Literature from University of Dhaka in 1956. He then joined the same university as a research scholar and lecturer. He received a Fulbright Scholarship to study linguistics in the United States in 1959.
He attended Yale University. He obtained Master's degree from Cornell University in General Linguistics and Cultural Anthropology in 1960. He joined the Department of Bengali at University of Dhaka as an assistant professor in 1961. He eventually served as a professor of the university. Later, he served as the vice-chancellor of the University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh. He has written 30 books on the language, literature, history and culture of Bangladesh.
