Liberation War: Comilla's Debidwar freed today

 
On December 4 in 1971, Cumilla's Debidwar upazila was liberated from the clutches of Pakistani occupation forces. To mark the day, the upazila administration, Muktijoddha Sangsad, Debiwdar, Press Club chalked out several programs such as rally, placing of floral wreaths on martyrs' graves, discussion meeting, cultural programs etc. A discussion meeting is scheduled to be held at upazila parishad auditorium today.

Our Debidwar correspondent reported that, freedom fighters defeated Pakistani troops and freed different parts of Cumilla district. There were several battles between the Mukti Bahini, liberation forces of Bangladesh, and the Pakistani occupation forces in various parts of the district. In a joint operation of the Mukti Bahini and the Allied forces, a fierce attack was launched against the Pakistani occupation forces on December 3. The operation was conducted in greater Comilla under the leadership of General RD Hira of the 23rd Mountain Division of the Allies. On the same night, the Companiganj bridge on the Comilla-Sylhet regional highway was blown up by the freedom fighters. An Allied tank fleet came to Debidwar via Burichang-Brahmanpara upazila. The Pakistani occupation forces left Debidwar at that night and fled to Cumilla cantonment. Meanwhile, an Allied forces tank fleet was on its way to Dhaka from Debidwar via Chandina Road and 6 freedom fighters died when an exchange of fire took place with the freedom fighters due to a misunderstanding in Mohanpur area. On the news of the Pak army fleeing to the Mainamati Cantonment that night to resist the freedom fighters, various groups of freedom fighters.

 and thousands of people from different parts of the country started marching towards the Upazila Sadar carrying the flag of Bangladesh.

A large number of freedom fighter including NAP president Prof Muzaffar Ahmed, Comrade Abdul Hafez, Captain Sujat Ali, MNA Abdul Aziz Khan and Asgar Hossain Master contributed to free the upazila on December 4.
