Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has called upon the newly-elected public representatives of Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC) to honor the promises they made to voters during the election campaign and work for the welfare of people.
The premier came up with the call while virtually addressing from Ganabhaban the swearing-in ceremony of NCC Mayor Dr Selina Hayat Ivy and 36 councillors at Osmani Memorial Auditorium in the capital on Wednesday. She administered the oath of office to Dr Ivy via video conference from Ganabhaban.
Local Government, Rural Development (LGRD) and Cooperatives Minister Md Tazul Islam also administered the oath to the newly-elected 36 councillors, including 9 councillors of reserved seats present in-person at the function.
Sheikh Hasina said, "We must never forget the promises made to the people during the campaign. You (elected representatives) act responsibly towards the people without thinking of your own pleasures." She also thanked the people of Narayanganj for electing her party candidate by voting in the symbol of 'Boat'.
Criticizing BNP, Jamaat and other opposition parties, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said, "Our opposition parties spread a lot of propaganda, but they don't look themselves in the mirror. The BNP, Jamaat and the other groups that criticized us need to look at those who founded them and the way they illegally grabbed power."
Selina Hayat Ivy took her oath of office as NCC mayor for a third consecutive term with a vow to 'work together with everyone' during her tenure.
The NCC election was held on January 16 last. Ivy defeated BNP leader Advocate Taimur Alam Khandaker who contested as an independent candidate, by a margin of 66,535 votes. She bagged 1,59,097 votes while Taimur got 92,166
