Family blames Tejgaon College BCL leader Slain Afsana Ferdous

Family members of Chhatra Union leader Afsana Ferdous have blamed a Tejgaon College unit leader of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) for her rape and murder. On the night of Saturday, Afsana, an architecture student from Mirpur's Saik Institute of Management and Technology, was dumped at a local hospital in an unconscious state by two unidentified youths. Her corpse was later received by police. Her neck bore marks of injury, it was reported. Family members have since alleged that the victim was raped before being murdered.

They have alleged that Tejgaon College BCL unit Organizational Secretary Habibur Rahman Robin had masterminded the crime. Her younger brother Fazle Rabbi said, "We suspect that misunderstandings between them led to the murder." He said that his sister and Robin were friends. Mujtaba Ahmed Murshed, a relative, said Afsana had been involved in a relationship with Robin when her family used to live in Tejgaon area. The relationship led to a bitter situation and Afsana left the area.

Friends tried to mediate a patch-up between Afsana and Robin about 10 days prior to the incident. But a day before the murder, Robin and Afsana fell out again. Her relatives allege that Robin had even resorted to threatening Afsana with dire consequences after the last spat between them.Murshed said that the family has been receiving threat calls from people who identified themselves as Robin's friends and brothers.

The callers have threatened the family against "making too much of it" and are pressing for a settlement.Apart from Robin, the family has accused 'Sourav', 'Babu' and some others of involvement in the crime. He further said that a person identifying himself as Sourav had broken the news of Afsana's death to her mother over phone and had informed her that her body was lying in the Bangladesh Medical College and Hospital morgue. The family was asked to recover the body from there, Murshed said.

The body was not found at that hospital.Another call by a person who identified himself as Babu told Afsana's mother that the body was lying at the Al Helal Hospital at Kafrul. When relatives rushed there, the authorities said that a body matching the description had been taken away by police. When family members contacted police, they were shown pictures of the body from which they recognised her. They were then asked to go to Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue from where they finally received her body.

In a Facebook post, Murshed has sought the intervention of the prime minister in delivering justice to the victim and her family.DMP's Mirpur Division Deputy Commissioner Masud Ahmed has termed it as a case of unnatural death. He added that their course of action would be finalized after receiving the autopsy report. He however said that investigation is already on and expressed confidence that positive results could be expected in a day or two.

Terming the death a case of murder, Bangladesh Chhatra Union staged a protest at Shahbagh on Wednesday.Speakers, including Bangladesh Communist Party President Mujahidul Islam Selim, accused "a section" of diverting attention away from a case of crime by projecting it as a case of suicide even before the autopsy report was out.Chhatra Union President Lucky Akter said that Chhatra Union leaders and activists from Tejgaon College were attacked when they tried to join the protest. She has blamed the "extremists" of the Chhatra League for the attack.
