How a poor village boy brightens image of Bangladesh abroad

We always long to get motivated hearing lectures from motivational speakers. But activities of some people motivate others. They talk less, focuses on works.

We now talk about awonder boy whose activities are much more than motivational speeches. Born in 1991 at a remote village named Ghullia in Bangladesh’s Magura district, the wonder boy has spread his country’s fame beyond the border.  80 percent people of the village are illiterate and most of them live under the poverty line. Pursuing higher studies from this village is a daydream. It is unthinkable to study and move to a developed country for better life.

When the boy was born, his parents were worried how they could provide him education and others. Who knew one day the boy would leave Bangladesh to spread the fame of his country. He is an inspiration for thousands of young people.

The boy from the poor village is Md Hussin Alam, who founded British Graduate College in Wroclaw, Poland. His academic achievements and entrepreneurial success have caused a stir in Europe and around the world.

Hussin Alam said, “I have achieved these successes with hard work in Bangladesh, UK and Poland.  My tears and blood have become the ink of the pen in every exam. Leaving home for pursuing studies in UK was a big challenge for me. With difficulties, I obtained the certificate of a ranking university in Europe, including UK. I was born and grew up at a poor village. Frankly speaking, I am a poor village boy. As there was no high school in my village, I had to get admitted to Ghullia Dakhil Madrasa and passed Dakhil exam in 2005.”

“My childhood days were thorny. At a village where people start their morning with farming and go to bed after completing farm works, it is very difficult to find good words for inspiration. Financial hardship was another big problem. My family was unable to provide me money to study. I did farm works at a daily wage of BDT 90. I provided tuition for class 3 and 4 students when I was at class six and continued before going to London. So, the dream of studying in London was a mission impossible,” Hussain Alam continued.

“When I went to Canterbuty, Kent, UK, I didn’t have any place to sleep. Somehow, I managed a place to sleep on the roof of a Kashmir Tandoori restaurant. My one year expenditure was around 18/19 thousand pounds. As a middle-class family it was not possible for them to give me money to study in UK. To earn this money, I had to do so many jobs, including kitchen pottery and cleaning. I used to do cleaning job in the morning, then hospitality management job at University of Kent and in the afternoon I was working as a manager of Indian restaurant till midnight. After work, I would stay up all night studying. I don't remember how much tear I shed and how many nights I didn’t sleep. I remember nearly 5 years I slept only 2/3 hours. I know the toughness of life very well,” he said.

Hussin Alam founded British Graduate College in Wrolcaw, Poland and owner of two restaurants. He worked as a lecturer at the International University of Logistic and Transport in Wroclaw, Poland. He also worked at the University of Wroclaw as a Teaching Assistant.

Mr. Alam is currently doing a PhD (waiting for defense) in political science at the Institute of Political Science, University of Wroclaw, Poland, focusing on the contribution of the social business model to solve social issues.
