Fakhrul, Abbas denied bail yet again

Fakhrul, Abbas denied bail yet again

A Dhaka court today rejected the bail petitions of BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and the party's standing committee member Mirza Abbas for the fourth time in a case filed over the December 7 clash between police and party men in Nayapaltan.

Judge Md Asaduzzaman of Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court passed the order after their lawyers moved the petitions on different grounds.

During today's hearing, defence lawyers for Fakhrul and Abbas told the court that their clients' names were not included in the first information report of the case and they were implicated in the case to harass them politically.

In the petitions, defence said the two BNP leaders -- Amanullah Aman and Abdul Kader Bhuiyan -- were granted bail after they were produced before another Dhaka court even though they were named in the FIR of the same case. So, their petitions should be granted considering their social status, the defence added.

The prosecution, however, opposed the bail petitions.

Upon hearing both sides, the judge turned down the defence pleas and fixed January 25 for next hearing on the petitions.

The case was filed with Paltan Model Police Station on December 8, a day after the clash broke out in front of BNP's Nayapaltan office. The clash left one person dead, and many others injured.
