Democracy in the country and spirit of the Liberation War will not survive if the BNP comes to power, said Awami League general secretary Obaidul Qauder.

He came up with the remark while addressing a rally in front of the ruling party's central office on Bangabandhu Avenue in the capital on Wednesday.
Awami League's Dhaka South City unit organised the rally marking the historic Homecoming Day of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Obaidul Quader, also the road transport and bridges minister, said, "We cannot let BNP go to power as it is the patron of communal forces and militancy." Those who put the country at the edge of destruction are now talking about the repair of the country, he further said.

Quader said Sheikh Hasina inaugurated over 100 bridges and 100 highways simultaneously in one day. "Sheikh Hasina can do and only Sheikh Hasina would be able to do. Let us strengthen her hands," he added.

Chaired by Dhaka South City AL president Abu Ahmed Mannafi, the rally was addressed, among others, by AL presidium members Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya, Quamrul Islam and Abdur Rahman, joint general secretaries Mahbubul Alam Hanif and Dr Dipu Moni, organising secretary Afzal Hossain, office secretary Barrister Biplab Barua, science and technology affairs secretary Abdus Sabur, deputy publicity secretary Syed Abdul Awal Shameem, executive member Sanjida Khanam, Krishak League president Krishibid Samir Chand, Swechhasebak League acting president Gazi Mesbaul Hossain Shachchu and Awami Mohila League president Meher Afroz Chumki.
