Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University honoured Vice-Chancellor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) Professor Dr Md Sharfuddin Ahmed with Nazrul Puraskar 2023 at an awards ceremony held at Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University, Trishal Upazila, Mymensingh on Wednesday. The eminent educationist, essayist and writer received the award for his extensive research on national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam.
Bangla Academy introduced the award named after the national poet this year. The academy will honour a Nazrul researcher or singer with the award every year.
State minister for cultural affairs KM Khalid was present as chief guest while presided over by Nazrul University VC. Dr. Soumitra Sekhar Dey. The ceremony also featured a discussion, book launch event and cultural show.
Md. Sharfuddin Ahmed is a Bangladeshi physician and academic. He is the incumbent Vice-Chancellor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU). He served as Pro Vice Chancellor (Administration) of BSMMU and Secretary General of Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA).
Ahmed was born in Gopalgonj in 1956. He passed S.S.C from Kasiani GC High School in 1972 and H.S.C from Government Rajendra College in 1974. He completed MBBS from Sher-e-Bangla Medical College (SBMC) in 1982. He obtained Diploma in Ophthalmology (DO) from IPGMR (now, BSMMU) in 1985. He achieved MS in Ophthalmology from Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) in 2004.
'We are glad to be able to honour Professor Dr Md Sharfuddin Ahmed with the Nazrul Puraskar. His detailed research and writings on the national poet give the readers a glimpse into the depths of Nazrul's works.' Speaker added.
'I am glad, proud and inspired after receiving this award,' said Professor Dr Md Sharfuddin Ahmed.
'Kazi Nazrul Islam is one of the most crucial poets of Bangla language. A key feature of his work that set him apart is his sheer optimism even in the direst situations. His works have instilled hope and inspiration in thousands of people,' he said, adding, 'My warmest congratulations in advance to the future recipients of the Nazrul Puraskar.'
KM Khalid thanked the Bangla Academy for introducing an award named after the national poet.
