Activity through Bhomra land port surges after launch of Padma bridge
Bhomra land port in Satkhira has seen a big surge in export-import activities with India - mainly because of its closer proximity to the West Bengal capital Kolkata after the launch of the Padma Bridge.
The land port's distance from Kolkata is only 65 kilometres while Benapole, the country's main land port in Jashore, is 86km away from the West Bengal capital.
According to the land port authority, the revenue about Tk 65 crore has been collected from the port in June, 2023 while Tk43 crore was collected in June 2022. some 400-450 trucks from India bring goods to Bangladesh every day through Bhomra port, while 50-100 freight trucks are exporting goods to India.
Satkhira District Fisheries Officer Mohammad Anisur Rahman said, "The total fish production in the district is about 1.40 lakh tons. Due to the ease of communication with the entire country due to the Padma Bridge, it is easy to deliver the fish to country's other parts within a day. The traders and people involved in the sector are benefiting from it."
West Sundarban Satkhira Range Assistant Conservator of Forests (ACF) AKM Iqbal Hossain Chowdhury said, "Tourists have increased in Satkhira region of Sundarbans after the inauguration of Padma Bridge."
As the people can come directly to Sundarbans through Padma Bridge, it has also increased the revenue of the government, he added.
Nasim Faruk Khan Mithu, president of Satkhira Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said, "Padma Bridge is a symbol of hope and development for coutnry's southwestern part. The fate of the people of this region has changed."
