From Gopalganj Correspondent: The Christian community of Gopalganj district commemorates Saint Mathuranath Bose on September 2 marking his soul on September 2.

He is considered as the integral part of Gopalganj. He was an outstanding social reformer in the area to turn the people into enlightened human resource to make their lifestyle healthy and potential. He was used to standing against every prejudice, illiteracy and absurdity that are in the way of enriching human being with education, free thought and development.

He was an inflammatory person to bring the society with peace and harmony, but it is matter of regret that the people are forgetting not to pay attention to the noble man and they are indifferent to his social reforms and achievement that he did for the peace and happiness of people. Gopalganj was then covered with poverty , illiteracy, and backwardedness.

During the British colonial rule Faridpur district Magistrate told Kolkata Mission authority to send a missionary, but nobody wished to come there thinking of backwardness of the area. Finally Mathuranth agreed to come there and wished to work. In 1874 he came to Gopalganj that took 15 days by boat to arrive in.

At the time he built schools, hospitals, post office and other people welfare structures to move the down trodden people in right direction.  He was born in 1843 at the village of Kotchandpur in Joshor district. He studied in different educational institutes in Kolkata and obtained graduation degree from Dove College in 1860 and then law degree. He started law practice in Kolkata High Court. Soon he changed his profession and started teacher ship in Kolkata London Missionary High School in 1865. In 1874 he was directed for preaching Christian religion and to go to Gopalganj. It is Mathuranath Bose who turned Gopalganj into police station and then Sub-division in 1909.
