Hortex Foundation has unveiled an ambitious five-year strategy aimed at fortifying value and cool chains to propel exports through enhancing quality and consumer satisfaction of fresh agro-products.It aimed at developing value chains, a comprehensive approach that involves improving quality of farm products, enhancing packaging standards and bolstering international market connections.

The organisation hosted a meeting on Sunday evening with managing director Dr Syed Md Rafiqul Amin in the chair.Additional agriculture secretary RabindrashriBarua, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council (BARC) Dr director Md Abdus Slam and Plant Quarantine Wing director Dr Md Rezaul Karim, among others, were present. The stakeholders underscored the importance of understanding the needs and conditions of importing countries, which could vary significantly, according to a press release. Another critical aspect discussed was the cool chain development that involves maintaining the temperature-controlled supply chain for perishables such as fruits and vegetables.

Air-conditioned transport for agro-products ensures that they reach international markets in optimal condition, thereby increasing their shelf life and marketability.Furthermore, the meeting underlined the significance of adopting a crop-based action plan to tailor an export strategy to specific agricultural products.

It also highlighted the importance of agricultural merchandising and chain management for streamlining the export process.Exporters said there was an urgent need for Hortex to receive both technical and financial support.Such support will not only facilitate improved production and post-harvest management, but also strengthen marketing efforts, ultimately having a positive impact on the country's overall exports.Hortex chairman Dr Amin said the five-year strategy with its focus on value and cool chain development promises to usher in a new era of agricultural exports.
