Sri Lanka’s cabinet has approved the reconstruction of pedestrian bridges across Marine Drive, minister of transport, Bandula Gunawardena said.

The pedestrian bridges across Marine Drive to access the Bambalapitiya and Wellawatta railway stations were in a precarious condition and generated much criticism on social media.

“We estimate the cost of the reconstruction at 96 million,” Gunawardena said at a cabinet decisions press briefing on Tuesday.

The project would be handed over to the State Development and Construction Corporation of Sri Lanka, and the reconstruction is expected to take place within a period of six months, Gunawardena said.

Temporary steps have been constructed at the Bambalapitiya train station.

“We didn’t have the money or the necessary permissions to build a bridge,” Gunawardena said. “So therefore, we put up a temporary bridge within ten days as we didn’t have the resources to get a permanent bridge.”

On Monday, the vicinity of the Bambalapitiya railway station on Marine Drive was closed due to the demolition of the overhead bridge.
