Professor Dr Sadeka Halim Chowdhury of Sociology Department of Dhaka University has been appointed as the vice-chancellor of Jagannath University.
She is the first female vice-chancellor of the university since its journey in 2005.
The education ministry issued a gazette notification on Thursday, saying President Mohammed Shahabuddin made the appointment for the next four years.
The position of vice chancellor at Jagannath University fell vacant following the demise of former VC Imdadul Hoque.
Sadeka Halim was appointed as the 6th VC of the University. She was also the first female dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Dhaka.
Before this, she also served as the first female Chief Information Commissioner of Bangladesh from July 2009 to June 2014.
According to the sources of the office of the vice-chancellor of the university, after the establishment of the university in 2005, the chairman of microbiology department of Dhaka University Professor Sirajul Islam was given the responsibility of the first vice-chancellor.
Then from 2008 Professor Abu Hossain Siddique of International Business Department of Dhaka University served as the second Vice-Chancellor. In 2009, the government appointed Professor Mesbah Uddin of Dhaka University as the third vice-chancellor. In 2013, the government appointed Prof. Mizanur Rahman as the fourth vice-chancellor.
Professor Dr. Imdadul Haque was appointed as the fifth vice-chancellor of the university on March 18, 2021.
