Former Chief Justice's reference comes up in his daughter's verdict

Former Chief Justice's reference comes up in his daughter's verdict

Former Chief Justice Badrul Haider Chowdhury was the 5th Chief Justice in Bangladesh. His daughter Justice Naima Haider is at present a judge in the Supreme Court's High Court Division. Justice Naima Haider issued an important verdict on Monday which states that government officials cannot contest elections within three years of their retirement.

Justice Naima Haider made references to a verdict issued by her father former Chief Justice Badrul Haider Chowdhury titled "Sheikh Abdus Sabur versus Recruiting Officer and Others". This reference was mentioned to elucidate the fact that local government elections and parliamentary elections are not similar things.

It is an exceptional and rare incident in the history of the Supreme Court that a Justice recalled a verdict issued by her father who was a Chief Justice in the past. Former Chief Justice Badrul Haider Chowdhury accorded a verdict on 1 September 1988 from the Appellate Division of Supreme Court. The verdict was about a case on local government elections. That verdict clarified that there are differences between local government elections and national polls.
