Barrister Mainul Hossain, former advisor to the caretaker government and Supreme Court lawyer, passed away on Saturday.

He breathed his last while undergoing treatment at Evercare Hospital in the capital on Saturday (December 9) evening. Besides his wife, two sons and a daughter, he is survived by many well-wishers. His wife Saju Hossain is the chairperson of English daily The New Nation.

His Private Secretary Wahiduzzaman confirmed his death news to journalists. Wahiduzzaman said that the first prayer of Barrister Mainul Hossain will be held on Sunday (December 10) at 10:30 am at Baridhara Jame asjid. After that another Namaz Janaza will be held at the Supreme Court premises outside after Johar prayer.

Barrister Moinul Hossain, son of famous journalist Tofazzal Hossain Manik Mia, graduated from Dhaka University in 1961 with a degree in Political Science. He then studied law at Middle Temple. He obtained the degree of Barrister-in-Law from the Bar in 1965.

Mainul Hossain was an elected member of the Bangladesh Parliament in 1973 from Pirojpur on the nomination of Awami League. He voluntarily resigned from his post in 1975. After the death of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, he joined the Democratic League led by Khandaker Mushtaq Ahmed and remained in the Democratic League until the fall of the Mushtaq government on 3 November.

Moinul Hossain also served as the president of the Bangladesh Newspaper Association. He was elected President of the Supreme Court Bar Association for the term 2000-2001.

Barrister Moinul Hossain held the duties of the Ministry of Information, Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, Housing and Public Works and Land Ministry of the Caretaker Government formed on January 11, 2007. On 8 January 2008, he resigned from the caretaker government.
