Two rapists sentenced to life term in 2 separate cases in Barishal


A court in Barishal has sentenced two accused to life imprisonment in two separate rape cases in Barishal city and Wazirpur upazila and fined each of them Tk 50,000. The verdicts were announced on Tuesday late afternoon by Yarab Hossain, judge of the Barishal Tribunal for Prevention of Violence against Women and Children. Humayun Kabir, bench assistant of the court confirming the facts on Wednesday noon both of the sentenced accused were absent in the court when the verdicts were announced. The convicts are - Muhammad Sohag, son of Kamal Hossain and Khalil Howlader, son of Ashraf Ali Howlader.

Bench assistant Humayan Kabir about the case history said, on April 1, 2005, a girl-child of Baroi Kandi area of Guthia Union of under Wazirpur Upazila was raped by Khalil Howlader. Father of the victim filed a case with Wazirpur Police Station accusing Khalil Howladar in this incident on April 9. Sub-Inspector (SI) Mamun Or Rashid of Wazirpur Police Station filed charge sheet in court accusing Khalil on 20 June 2005.

Later, the judge gave the verdict on the testimony of six of the 13 witnesses. Regarding another case, the bench assistant said on April 24, 2014, Muhammad Sohag, the tenant of a house adjacent to Kerani Bari area of the city, took the victim to her room and tying a towel on her face violated her. After that the victim became sick and handed over to her uncle. Later, she was admitted to Barishal Sher E Bangla Medical College Hospital. Then father of the victim filed a case at Barishal Kotwali Police Station on May 1 of that year.

Abu Taher, sub-inspector of Kotwali Police Station, submitted the charge sheet to the court on July 27 of that year, accusing only Sohag. Bench assistant Humayan Kabir said that the judge gave verdict of this case on the testimony of six people.
