BNP leader Hannan Shah passes away

BNP standing committee member ASM Hannan Shah passed away at a hospital in Singapore early Tuesday. He was 77.He breathed his last around 5.05am (Singapore time) at Raffles Heart Centre in Singapore while undergoing treatment for cardiovascular diseases, said his son Rezaul Hannan.Meanwhile, BNP announced a four-day mourning program from Tuesday. It will hoist black flags and keep the party flag at half-mast atop its offices across the country.
Besides, doa and milad mahfils will be held across the country on Friday seeking salvation of Hannan Shah's departed soul.

Meanwhile, a condolence book was opened at BNP's Nayapaltan central office yesterday for party leaders and activists to express their shock until 5:pm on Thursday. Hannan Shah is survived by his wife, two sons, a daughter and a host of relatives, followers and well-wishers to mourn his death. BNP spokesperson Sayrul Kabir Khan said the
veteran politician and former army officer died during treatment for cardiovascular diseases.On September 6, Hannan Shah complained of chest pain at his Mohakhali DOHS residence around 8:30om, and then was taken to the Combined Military Hospital in Dhaka where he had been on life support.

Following doctors' advice, the BNP leader was flown to Singapore on September 11 for better treatment at the Raffles Heart Centre.His first namaz-e-janaza was held at a mosque in Singapore after Esha prayers on Tuesday, said BNP chairperson's media wing member Shamsuddin Didar.Hannan Shah's son Rezaul Hannan said his father's body is scheduled to arrive at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport from Singapore by 6:00pm on Wednesday.

From the airport, his mortal remains will be taken to his Mohakhali DOHS residence.Later, it will be kept at CMH mortuary. It will be there overnight on Wednesday.His second janaza will be held at  Mohakhali DOHS mosque at about 10:00am on Thursday, while the third one at the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad around 11:00am and the fourth one in front of BNP's Nayapaltan central office after Zohr prayers.Hannan Shah's body will be will be taken to Gazipur on Friday where his three janazas -- one at Joydebpur Rajbari ground at 9am, another at Kapasia Pilot High Scholl ground around 10am and the last one at Gram Chala Bazar High Scholl ground after Jumaa prayers -- will be held, and then will be buried at his family graveyard in Kapasia.

President Abdul Hamid expressed deep shock at the death of former minister and BNP leader ASM Hannan Shah.
BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia and Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir have expressed their condolences over his death.He was born in Kapasia's Ghagtia in 1939. His father Fakir Abdul Mannan was a minister of the Pakistan government from 1965-68.Hannan Shah was commissioned in Bangladesh Army in 1962 and retired in 1981 as a Brigadier General.He joined BNP in 1983 and was made Dhaka city unit BNP's joint convener, and inducted into the cabinet when BNP came to power in 1991.

He came to spotlight in 2007 after 1/11 political changeover by taking strong position in favor of BNP chief Khaleda Zia to prevent the party's split by a group of the party's reformist leader.Hanan Shah was made party standing committee member in its fifth council in 2009 and in its sixth council this year as well. He had also been elected MP twice from Gazipur-4 constituency.
