The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on Tuesday summoned former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed, his wife and three daughters to face interrogation over graft allegations.
A notice was sent from the ACC headquarters asking Benazir to appear before the anti-graft watchdog on 6 June and his wife and daughters were asked to appear on 9 June for their statements regarding investigations against them.
The anti-graft watchdog came up with the move days after a court ordered the authorities concerned to confiscate the properties of Benazir and his family members. On May 23, a Dhaka court ordered the authorities concerned to confiscate properties under 83 deeds of 114 acres of land, and freeze 33 bank accounts under the name of Benazir and his family members.
Three days later, the same court asked the authorities concerned to confiscate assets under 119 more deeds of Benazir and his family members in connection with alleged graft. Besides, capital market regulator Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC) on Monday ordered to freeze BO accounts of former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed and his family members.
According to the instructions of BSEC in this regard, no transaction can be done as these BOs while they are blocked. That is, shares cannot be traded and money cannot be deposited or withdrawn from these BO accounts.
Benazir Ahmed served as the IGP of Bangladesh Police from 15 April 2020 to 30 September 2022.
