Md Shafiqur Rahman has come out of retirement to be appointed as the managing director and chief executive of Biman Bangladesh Airlines. He retired in 2017 after directing marketing and sales of the national carrier.
After the Awami League government was toppled on Aug 5, Biman reappointed former chairman Abul Muyeed Chowdhury as the new chairman of its board of directors on Aug 19, bdnews24 reports.
The board, which itself was formed on Aug 27, picked Shafiqur for the role on Wednesday.
Shafiqur started his career as a trainee commercial officer at Biman in 1986. He had previously served as a director of administration and human resources, procurement and logistics support.
He has also worked in various capacities, including tariff, market research, reservation, and cargo. In addition, he was made the airline's country manager in the Singapore, Thailand, and Greece stations. Shafiqur did his bachelor's and master's in economics from Dhaka University. He completed his MBA in marketing from the University of Southern Queensland in Australia and his Doctor of Business Administration from Southern Cross University in Australia in 2011. He has several diplomas and training in aviation from the International Air Transport Association and Bangladesh Airlines Training Centre.
